About the Show

Many people have done it; many more are thinking of it. But what’s it really like to move north?

Our changed world has forced firms to rethink the way they work. It’s also led people to think more carefully about what really matters and whether they relish a return to safe, pre-pandemic patterns.

Going against the tide is hard.

It’s more than a question of place. It’s a question of heart & soul, your anchor in a world you know.

Why risk all, pull up the anchor and head north? Who would do such a thing?

In a world that’s changed forever the old certainties have gone. Rush hour becomes a stately stroll.

Daily commuting? Gone.

Same old, same old? Gone.

North-South Divide? Fading…?

Personal priorities in terms of status, earnings, home life and happiness are being questioned, perhaps more closely now than they’ve ever been, by people of all ages.

Old norms accepted without a thought are gone.

Why go back to commuting from Basingstoke, Bedford, Basildon or Brighton when, whisper it quietly, there may be more to life?

A different way. Perhaps a better way?

Staycations give some a glimpse of a way of life they’d never even remotely considered a possibility.

What’s the secret to making it work? How do you succeed if you decide to risk it all by going north?

The only way to find out was to ask those who have: Those who chose to make a Great Move North.

Invites you on the journey

Tony Maguire’s career in national newspapers nearly ended two weeks after it began when, as an eager 20-something industrial correspondent keen to impress, he told Kelvin MacKenzie, Editor of The Sun, that he felt certain Nissan would build a new car plant in the North East of England.

Ministers and the rest of the media all knew it was headed to South Wales, Merseyside or the Midlands. Kelvin put the story on Page One and a promising career hung by a thread for six weeks until an inscrutable silence was broken. After the solitary scoop, it was all downhill through the dying days of Fleet Street and on into big corporate private and public sector roles topped out Underground as Director of Communications at the Tube.

Tony set up Boxkik in 2010 to help clients manage and make news. His great move north came eight years ago after 30 years on the road.
